Hive is a board game with a difference. There is no board! The pieces are added to the playing area thus creating the board. As more and more pieces are added the game becomes a fight to see who can be the first to capture the opposing Queen Bee.

The soldier ants battle to keep control of the outside of the hive, whilst the Beetles climb up to dominate the top. Spiders moving into holding positions as the Grasshoppers jump in for the kill. Keeping one eye on the hive and the other on your opponents reserves, the tension builds as one wrong move will see your Queen Bee quickly engulfed; .... game over!

Hives unique gameplay is suitable for players of all ages. The game is quickly learned but hard to master like other classic games of its genre. Interface elements clearly indicating where a player may move or place their pieces makes this version easier for the novice to learn than the tabletop version, and players without a partner will be challenged by the AI opponent.

Hive is a beautiful 3D game that allows the player to choose from different sets of pieces and different colored backgrounds. While Hive is not traditionally played on a board, users may display a hex grid to aid their visualization of the games possibilities and movements.

This version of Hive includes the Mosquito, a parasitic new Hive piece that takes on the abilities of its neighbors. Use your Mosquito cleverly as an extra Ant, Beetle or Spider. Tournament rules forbidding placement of the Queen Bee as the first move are also an option for each game.

The single player mode features four levels of difficulty. As the player defeats each level, the next is unlocked. Two players can also play each other using one device in hotseat mode.

Pros and cons of Hive app for iPhone and iPad

Hive app good for

My and family love this game ! I think you should add the lady bug as another option piece like your expansion piece from the original game :)
Hive is a lot of fun. Considering the real game is about $50 with the expansions, this iPhone version is a great download. Would like to see the ladybug tiles added soon.
I bought this app expecting an elegant game based on a simple set of rules. The first game left me doubtful, but by the third I was hooked. Perhaps my initial 5 star rating was a bit hasty. After playing a bit more, it is easy to see areas for improvement, chiefly by including the ladybug, as well as the industry standard retina/universal update. Still fun though!
Having seen the board game years ago, I thought I would give it an try. After playing it nearly 2 hours straight I will likely pick up the real game now as well. Simple rules, incredibly smart game.
Game works just as well as I was hoping it would, but it would be great to see an ipad version, as well as the addition of the ladybug and pillbug.
I love the board game. But I always wanted to use the pillbug and ladybug in my game play. Please make an update for the 2 new creatures.

Some bad moments

Hi, the interface is good, but we noticed a wrong interpretation of the end game rules. The app considers that a player has lost the game if they cannot either move or place a new piece on the board. Thats incorrect. In such a case the game should proceed normaly, since the other players moves may free the first players pieces. The only way to end a Hive game is when one or both queens are completely surrounded. The issue is that you are no able to see the which piece is covered by another one.
you cant use the game on a i pod 2. generation! For a 5 mb game you need ios 5. on my ipod 2.generation runs tiger woods from EA! And ios 5 doesnt run on a ipod 2generation! The solution is quite simple!!! BUY a knew apple machine!^^ But lovely apple and Tom Schulz, i wont! If the games runs on my ipod 2.generation than i will give 5 stars. i want just what you promise! You say the minimum system requirements are a IPOD 2 GENERATION! DO IT! and you get 5 stars! And dont tell me something about network playing and stability! my wlan is very fine and i know what possibilities are in the ipod 2nd generation!
The app menus, graph control look really above average, they should be improved. Was never able to play agains other players online. The dumbot is too easy, very predictable, even at the hardest setting. But hey, Hive is an amazing game! The app could be a good way to be introduced to the game but it should be free unless there is a major upgrade.
Instructions are poor. Updating a game this far out and still not updating graphics for retina display is not very acceptable. This version fixes a bug but introduces a game ending one and still released it? Getting an error is better than having the software not work. This title needs a LOT of work still. I cant recommend it.
First of all, I want to say that Im a big fan of the actual, physical, always-functioning Hive boardgame. But when I downloaded the "Hive0002" update, it completely, and apparently irretrievably, killed the music and/or sound effects on some of my other games. Now, thats some historically crappy programming! The volume, mute, and game options arent the problem, and deleting Hive didnt fix anything, either. STAY AWAY FROM THIS TOXIC GAME!!!
On top of the other bugs that have been described there is a rules bug. In this version you cant place the queen on turn one. This is allowable under the rules and is actually a decent strategy.
