Hive App Reviews

Good

Im a big fan of hive. I know many people are complaining about bugs (pun) but with the latest update, online is working smoothly. Yes there is room for improvement, but remember that new apps will always have kinks to work out. Im in for the long haul - the game is usable (even if I cant use my queen first opening). The more people buy it, the more support the app will get. I hope it gets a nice long lifespan. I LOVE hive.

Online fixed!

This app has introduced me to the game of Hive. I am hooked! And, now that multiplayer has been fixed the game has improved so much. Theres still room for improvement though.

Great game

1. mosquito game have a bug, a piece connected to it can move, broke the hive. 2. add ladybug plz! 3. need retina icon.

Please add replay option.

Always loved Hive board game. Have not had any issues with app. Wish there was a rematch option and a way to switch off who goes first.

Great game, mediocre translation

To start off, I absolutely love the board game Hive. Its one of the very best one on one board games available and has a depth of strategy on par with chess. While Im excited to finally get the iPhone version which has been absent for a long time, its got a lot of issues. Still worth the price of admission. Please get the Ladybug in to the game!

Good

Its a great game and I love it, but adding the Ladybug would make it awesome!

Good but could be better

The original Hive is a great luckless "board" game. This implementation has a good interface, good graphics, and works well, but could use the following improvements: 1. The Ladybug expansion 2. An option to randomly assign sides 3. Better AI. Even Hard isnt particularly challenging. 4. A way to turn off the tournament rule that disallows leading with your queen bee. I like the rule, but I occasionally like to play classic Hive without this rule.

Very good, but AI and online play need work

This is a very good implementation of a great game. It is chess-like, but i dont feel it is quite as deep. This is a good thing though, as you can play several games in one sitting and try out different strategies. Each piece has different movements, with one of them (the mosquito) that clones the movement of pieces next to it. Legal moves for each piece are displayed when you touch the piece, making it very easy to learn. After a few games you may find that the AI is too easy to beat, even on "hard." this leads to the second problem: online play is painfully slow, because other (random) players may not be on the same schedule as you are. This is an issue with the other people playing, not with the game itself. Playing against friends will probably be fine unless they are slow too. My final comment is about the graphics. I play on an iPad and the pieces look a bit jaggy on the edges, but this in no way detracts from gameplay. This has inspired me to look at getting the physical boardgame.

Needs updates

The Hive board game is fantastic, but the iPhone version is merely okay and hasnt been updated in a long time. - The 3D graphics are superfluous and annoying; the whole game would be better as a 2D game. - The sounds are annoying and I turned them off immediately. - There are some programming bugs lurking. - No iPad version. - No ladybug. I dont know how much support is behind the app since it did "disappear" from the app store for a while. There have been no recent updates. This board game is a 5-star game, but this version is not.

Needs AI Improvement

I consider myself a novice player but I have won almost every game against the AI on hard level. Defensively the AI is descent. Offensively the AI is very weak.

Learn from Letterpress

The AI is appallingly bad. This game ought to be redesigned to be multiplayer-only and have less of a glut of menus. Letterpress gets it right. The visuals would be quite realistic, except they dont support the Retina display or the iPad, and no matter what color you select for the background it looks terrible, because the grid has these gray outlines that dont go. Tile sets and color schemes should come together as a set and always look good. Come to think of it, Letterpress gets these things right too. I love to play Hive in person, but I want to have several games going at a time and I want it to look good on all my devices. This app needs a makeover.

Like it, but room for improvement.

As a new player, Im glad the iOS app is available. I dont regret buying it. I agree with other reviewers, the AI could definitely be stronger, especially with regard to offense. Still, its good practice for a new player, and its nice to have this on my device for 2-player mode whenever and wherever. No complaints about the UI here. Id like to be able to disable the grid lines, though.

Give me my money back....

Game is locked on the tutorial and I cant open a menu to get out. It looks really bad on the IPad. Do not buy...... Game is seriously flawed. I wish I could give this less than 1 star.

Appallingly Bad

Hive is a terrific board game, but the app version is ugly, slow, doesnt support iPad. Dont buy this, buy the board game.

Cant even play

The app is very poorly made and it wont even let me take my turn. Ill be asking Apple for a refund.

Fun!

While it could be prettier, this game is fun and great for learning the board game! I hope they add the ability to take back moves on two player so you could play along while youre learning. If youve looked at the board game and not bought it, try this app.

Needs universal/retina update

I love the board game, but this app could use some dev support. Could we get a retina and universal update please? Also why not just have pieces be dragged and dropped? Just my two cents. Ok if youre looking to scratch a Hive itch though.

Give me iPad

You know, I would play this game more if it were made for the iPad. Im looking forward to this update cause this game is spectacular otherwise!!!!

great game

i love this game. i hope this gets an update and get optimized for iphone5.

Good, but has problems.

Hive is one of my favorite games, so I was pretty stoked to get the app. The game runs smoothly for the most part until you try online play. So far Ive had games that glitch and leave an "island" piece not connected to anything, and I currently have a game going in which, try as I might, it will not register my move. Its been like this for days. Unfortunately, the only option when this happens is to quit the game, and because I cant send messages when the app glitches it looks as if I forfeit. The other complaints I have are minor, not really deal breakers. The AI isnt terrible, but it rarely wins even on the "hard" setting. Also, there is no ladybug. Ultimately, I just hope they fix the glitches!
