Confused

Why was this released in its current state? Its extremely unpolished. Im not sure who was responsible for the dev on this but its REALLY rough. Such a simple clean game should have had a much better iOS port than this. Bummed.

Challenging game!

Fun and addictive game!

Need more bugs!!!

This is the first time I want more bugs in an app. LOL

Poor

Poor port of a great game. Graphics are jagged, app sluggish, and the AI is pretty dumb. Not sure why the game uses an isometric view either- especially with the bad graphical treatment of the pieces. A shame.

Impossible to play VS others

I have not completed any of my games in the last two months as they all are stuck with me not being able to send turns to my opponent nor am I able to quit the games successfully in order to clear them from the list. I imagine some of my opponents are similarly stuck as they appear to have not played their turns in a very long time. Need proper resolution for this.

Great learning tool for Hive...

This game is fun and challenging in the most basic form. If you like strategy games this game is for you. The app itself is great for learning the rules and how to maneuver each of the bugs. Beyond that the A.I. isnt very challenging once you figure out what youre doing. I was unable to play online and passing a phone back and forth between two players isnt that appealing of an idea. Over all, for 99 cents its worth learning the game to see if you want to purchase the real board game. Most of the other reviews are pretty spot on with their arguments, pros, and cons as well.

PLEASE UPDATE!

I am guessing that this app will remain "as is" since it has not been updated for years and that makes me sad. This app has a lot of potential and would be great for ppl like me who own the physical game and want to play when no one else is around. Adding the ladybug and the pillbug with just a little bit of polish would take this app from mediocre to amazing. I would even pay more than 99 cents for it.

Very fun game!

Very fun and addictive game with awesome gameplay!

AI is much too weak, even on hard.

Great intro to Hive

Hive is a great little board game. Id owned it for a year but really didnt get into it until I bought the app. Great tutorial and 4 or so difficulty levels to slowly introduce you to different ways to play the pieces. Do wish the ladybug expansion was included. Note: this is iphone only. The scaled graphics look godawful on an iPad.

Okay

AI isnt great. Game pauses to think for a long time. Online play doesnt seem to work at all.

Great game, okay app

Hive is a great game and this inexpensive app is a good way to learn the rules and decide if you want to buy a physical set. Even set to Hard, the AI makes some foolish moves. For example, it will frequently move an ant from one spot next to your queen to an adjacent spot without any clear reason (and then do it again the next turn) instead of placing a new piece. If the AI does not do something foolish like this early in the game, it can provide enough challenge for a beginner like myself. The app has not been updated in over a year and really could use an iPad version along with an improved AI. IAP for the expansion pieces would be fine.

Great game but poor AI

The interface works well and the graphics are nice. The problem with this release is that the AI is very easy to beat, even on hard. The opening is very scripted and it starts making silly moves by turn 5 or so. I was recently introduced to the board game version of Hive and loved it. Bought this app as a chance to improve my skills. Definitely disappointed to find the AI so simple, repetitive, and predictable. Its nice to have for the two player option though, if you cant access the board game. Havent tried online yet--may update after I do.

Rule problems

Just downloaded this app. Unfortunately, it requires you to "place" pieces without giving you the option to "move" a piece as a turn prior to placing your queen.

Love the game but needs updates.

This game is great and true to the boardgame. The only problems are the horrible/easy AI, the need to bring in the ladybug and Pillbug pieces...and the interface/look desperately needs to be updated. Reminds me of early PowerPoint presentations. All things aside though, playing with friends is ideal but the random online game can scratch the itch.

AI and GameCenter / Online issues

Hive is a great game as many have said and the app does justice to the game. The two big problems are (1) that the AI on hard is still too easy to beat and Army of Frogs / Gen 42 games has not updated the app at all. And (2) there is nothing to speed up online play. A simple implementation would be that if a player doesn’t move for a period (say 48 or 72 hours), they forfeit the game. This would help when someone doesn’t move a last move because they have lost. (2+) It would also be nice to have an online leaderboard, or have games with a clock (for actual live games - 30 or 60 seconds per move). Games like Cribbage Pro have excellent online play, rankings, and various settings to promote quick play and ratings. So much potential. So little ambition.

Fun Game, BAD APP

The board game is fun. The app has a TON of issues. I stole a win because I moved the last piece against my own queen and it gave me the victory. The graphics are crap and the multiplayer lag is an issue. You have exit game and renter to see if the person online has moved. The game and strategy itself is great...but that has more to do with the excellent board game than the app itself.

Abandoned software

Hive is one of my favorite games, and this is a good implementation thats a lot of fun when it works. However this app hasnt been updated since 2012, the AI is weak, there is no leaderboard support in Game Center, and worst of all online play has become all but impossible because of several game breaking multiplayer bugs. I really wish this app would be updated, I would happily buy a version of this game that was kept current, but cant recommend this one because of all the issues.

Excellent game, mediocre app

As a game, Hive is brilliant - 5 stars. The IOS adaptation is pretty feeble... Someone needs to remake this game, itll be an app store best seller.

Completely broken on ios9

Im on a brand new iPhone 6s with ios9 and it is not possible to play. Cannot select pieces. Do not pay for this.
